Back in the 60s, the skies of Sao Jose dos Campos were cut by balloons made of tissue paper colored, day and night during June and July every year. My brother and I wrapped in blankets and stayed watching the balloons in the hope that some fell into our farm.

At that time, balloons were not prohibited. There was not  awareness that could cause any fire or injury to anyone else.

The joke was not just release them: In addition, following and recovering them to turn to release them again.

Not just young people played with the balloons, but many grown men also participated and enjoyed the whole process of the balloon makers art.

Our aunt Cidica performed every year a big party to celebrate her daughters birthday in July. The whole family was there every year. There was plenty of food, a bonfire and the peak point ... The release of balloons!

My brother Felipinho (little Felipe) sewed the balloons and my uncles made the fuses with burlap sack, paraffin and kerosene. Everything was so well done that the balloons disappeared from sight. My uncles said that, before dropping to the ground the fuses went out on air. Therefore, there was no flame.

Once Felipinho made a huge balloon (see photo above and bellow!), but without stability. It began to go up, danced, danced ... and caught fire, falling very close to us. It was the only one that got burned!

Felipinho had many friends who also liked to chase balloons. There was a "competition" between them to see who arrived first on the fallen balloon. This guy would be the owner of the balloon.

One very dark night, in the empty fields of São José, Felipe’s friends ran in bicycles behind a good balloon. Felipinho, smart, ran forward, and to delay their friends and to catch the balloon first, pretended he was going through a fence and shouted "CAUTION WITH BARBED WIRE !!!". Everyone stopped and start looking around to this imaginary wire while he took hold of the balloon.

Cada balão soltado, uma nova emoção.

Each balloon released, a new emotion.

But please, DON’T RELEASSE BALLOONS! In these days they are highly dangerous because of industries and residences by everywere. Release them is a crime!

Mas que foi bom, isso lá foi...

                But It was really cool...

Vôo-livre (no Sul de Minas) em 2 tempos

Hang gliding (in South of Minas Gerais state) in 2 times

Now that I'm on vacation in Paraisópolis, I have reflected enough on the part of my childhood and adolescence, when Felipe was here with family and flying his glider with "Quero-quero" as the picture below:
1983 flight

In those days, he had a parachute built by a friend of Sao Jose dos Campos (Pangoni), which he tied in his jeep, and towed into the air.

How Paraisópolis is known for being a city that is windy, it was enough to tie the parachute to the jeep and we hung on the rope.
Funny but dangerous play...

The location of the picture is where it is currently the new city cemetery. And as you can see, It was the former "official landing" of the gliders. The other landing place, for the high performance gliders, was the old flying club of the city, where today is located the company Delphi.

Today, July 10, 2010, in Santa Rita do Sapucai (23 miles from Paraisóplolis), I made a flight in honor of my father Felipe, who lasted 30 minutes. I "Intubated" (entered in the clouds) and show some photos of this short, but spectacular flight, that I made in a equipment that I believe Felipe would adopt without thinking twice, because it flies as far as his old wing - and even more, I dare to say.

Estaríamos repartindo a mesma térmica... seria o máximo”... Será que ele me ouviu?

In flight, I said "Hey, bro ... if you could be here now ... We would be sharing the same thermal ... would be the most "... Does he hear me?...

Uma Forcinha – A little Force

Sempre que me encontro com o amigo J. Quintino nos corredores da empresa, ele me conta sobre três episódios interessantes:
Whenever I meet with my friend J. Quintino in the corridors of the company, he tells me about three interesting episodes:
1 - When in a meeting between friends, they brought a bumper of a Volkswagen Passat for everyone to try to compress it with their own arms.
After all tried in vain, Felipe put a wad of tow at each end, and a single attempt, the compressed like a toy.
After the attempt, some fellow supported the bumper with one of the ends up on the floor and threw their body on top to compress it, without achieving any results.
2 - Once, a Volkswagen Beetle from a friend punctured the tire, and I do not know if it was for lack of a jack, Felipe raised the car by the side that had a flat tire and told the owner to perform the replacement.
3 - Back in the 80s the employees had the habit of conducting championships trial of arm rail in the company, and as was expected, Felipe was aways among the finalists.
The problem is, who was also a finalist, was Mr. Guido, director of the company and therefore, his boss.
Then, behold, in the grand final, remaining only Guido and Felipe ... Quintino describes Felipe arriving at the section with a towel tied around his neck, making gestures reminiscent of Rocky Balboa, the movie Rocky Sylvester Stallone.
But how to win the boss on the arm rail? They say that when he began, his boss began to lost ... So his boss began to tease him, blow him, among other things outside the rules, and by that Felipe was forced to lose, leaving the title to his opponent.
Aluízio Rosa e seu eterno cavaquinho

We don’t know exactly what made Felipe lose the championship but we have suspected until now.
And before someone scold me for telling these stories, because I’m the son of the man, it is worth remembering that those who did it - and still counting - was not the son of Felipe, but a friend (and still have witnesses).
